Maundy Thursday

Maundy Thursday

April 2 - “Jesus took bread…and he took a cup.” (Matthew 26:26-27)

Jesus turned the simple into the sacred. He used two everyday elements to symbolize his upcoming sacrifice on the cross. And the disciples would never forget!

The Lord’s Supper is more than a ritual.

It’s more than a story.

It gives us one of the most treasured practices in our faith.

Remembering is a lost art. Yet with the bread and cup, we don’t just recall–we experience. We engage our minds and senses to feel the final meal Jesus had with his disciples before the crucifixion.

Jesus had trained them for 3 years, but nothing would train them for what came next…the brutal death of their closest friend.

  • Would they persevere through trial?

  • Would they hold onto hope through suffering?

  • Would they remember the truth in the midst of confusion?

On this Thursday, we step into the disciples’ moment. We remember Jesus’ teaching, his example of service, and most of all his love.

And then, we let Jesus’ act of love fuel our love toward one another.

Prayer Prompt: Father, please help me to love others with the love of Jesus. He sacrificially served others, so I want to sacrificially serve others today. Please provide opportunities for me to do so, and please give me the strength to love them well.

“The Lord’s Supper was meant to remind us of Christ’s death and the benefits we receive from it.” -J.C. Ryle

*Maundy. It’s a unique term, but it comes from the Latin word mandatum (“command”) which recalls Jesus’ command to love one another (John 13:34).
